Unfortunately, in 2015 more than 35,000 individuals lost their lives in car accidents. This represents more than a 7% increase from the previous year. A new study from the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, however, shows that millennials struggle with putting down their phones even when they are behind the wheel.
More than 2,500 Americans were identified in this recent study and they discovered that 19-24 year olds were the most likely to check their phones while in the driver seat. Unfortunately, millennial drivers are also not as supportive of legislation that is designed to curb distractions while on the road and millennials are more likely to normalize texting and driving behavior when compared with other groups.
Nearly 90% of respondents between the ages of 19 and 24 admitted to engaging in behaviors like red light running, speeding and texting. That number dropped to just under 80% for those individuals between the ages of 25 and 39 and it dropped to 69% for those individuals between the ages of 16 and 18.
Unfortunately, almost 100 Americans are killed every single day as a result of vehicle accidents associated with phone use. One of the other common causes of car accidents is drinking and driving. If you or someone you know has already been injured in an accident as a result of texting and driving, you may be entitled to recover compensation.
